A high school history teacher was trying to get her students interested in the lesson. She looked around the room at the sleepy faces and decided to ask a simple question to wake them up.
“Alright, class,” she said in a cheerful voice. “Let’s see who was paying attention. Can anyone tell me where the Magna Carta was signed?”
She scanned the room. Most students avoided eye contact, pretending to be intensely interested in their textbooks or the ceiling. Finally, her eyes landed on a boy in the back row who was doodling in his notebook.
“Alex,” she called out. “How about you? Where was the Magna Carta signed?”
Alex looked up, startled. He blinked a few times, trying to remember what the Magna Carta even was. He saw the teacher’s expectant face and the smirks of his classmates. He had to say something.
“Well,” he began slowly, buying time. “I know it was a very important document…”
“Yes, it was,” the teacher prompted. “And it was signed… where?”
Alex took a deep breath, a look of sudden inspiration on his face. He stood up straight and declared with complete confidence:
“At the bottom.”
